Description

I'm sticking with the gentle giant concept here, but I tried to add a little depth of the story.

I thought it would be a cool idea if a machine built to cut down trees could suddenly have an appreciation and curiosity about life. (Life?) I thought that the delicate pose of his hand cradling the frog would illustrate this. I haven't drawn a robot since I was a kid and never to this level of detail, so I refered to about a dozen different designs. Basically trying to make him look like a humanoid bulldozer with an expressive and inquisitive face.

I just did this one for fun, I hope you like it.

Comments are very welcome.

Great work Hardy. I love the bot in the background, carrying the tree.
I think the rendering could use some more 'spice'. Rust, shiners, damage, etcetera. Just to give it more life.

Edit: Much better now (thumbup)

Great work, Arnie's comment on the texturing is a good one, he's obviously a worker bot so it's probable that he'd have scratches, dents, dirt or even some rust. This adds more depth to the character, still very nice work, well done.

Can't say I don't take comments seriously. I added some scratches and stains, but tried to do so sparingly. Don't want that to compete too much with the focal point. Thanks guys, good call.

Cool idea and well done. The one thing that I think would make it better is the highlights on the metal were brighter.

Thanks for the crits everybody. Kemp, that was definitely a concern of mine when I compressed the file for this site. I tried adjusting the proportions but it never quite looked as right. I also wanted the frog to seem tiny and fragile by comparison. Hopefully it was apparent that it was a frog.

Also, thanks so much for the votes, everybody.

:) Good colour palette and subdued textures
:) Effective sense of depth
:) Good bot design
:) Well done on the clarity - sharp without being scratchy
:| The idea is a very cliched (so much so I admit to using it myself fairly recently ;) )
:( Tree stumps on the left - perspective is off and the top edges are too rounded
:( The stretched-out leg, especially bottom left, tends to lose its 3D-ness and doesn't help the composition. I would have liked it bent at the knee to show a bit of ground in the left-hand corner
+8/10

Great concept and very well done! Good use of "fog" (desaturation) to isolate the subject from the background. I really like the placement of the subject; I feel like I'm standing right next to the main robot. Nice textures as well.

Top marks. :)

Great environment. Light skims gracfully through a once vast forest that has become mostly stumps. Pose of close robot seems generally interested in the small frog, which is usually a trait known as human trait.

beautiful work... I think that it would have worked better if it was a bit more closeup...
I love the robot in the background
